And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:5
When Jesus was born, Light came into the world. And in announcing His arrival, the Lord used light in several ways to reach many people, as a symbol of the true Light of the World.
The wise men followed a bright star in the sky that led them to Jesus.
The shepherds were suddenly surrounded by the glory of the Lord, as the angel spoke to them in the dark fields.
Anyone who had been looking could have found the star in the sky, or perhaps the Lord would have sent an angel to speak of the Light that had come. Anyone who wanted to see the Light could have seen it.
But, the problem was, very few people were looking.
Despite many prophecies and a promise of the coming Savior, most people just weren’t concerned. King Herod and all of Jerusalem were surprised by the wise men’s proclamation of His star. They clearly were not looking.
The fact is, we live in a dark and dying world, and it was no different when Jesus came as The God Man, as the Baby King. His arrival lit up the world, literally and figuratively, but people just didn’t want to comprehend it.
The Gospel of John even tells us that God sent John the Baptist as a witness of the Light, that all men might believe in Jesus. But, many people chose not to see John the Baptist either.
God has given us so much information pointing us to the Savior. He has made it very clear, illuminating the role of Jesus as the perfect sacrifice. It is up to us to see Him, and to help others to see Him.
Genesis 1:3 tells us that God made the light and separated it from the darkness and that it was good. May we see the True Light and may we be in the Light, separated from the darkness of this world.
